AI data center memory demand is creating cost pressure in consumer electronics, shifting the economics of entry-level laptops and phones. This situation concretely demonstrates the effects of the phenomenon dubbed RAMageddon on the consumer market.

HBM chips used for AI training and inference in data centers have caused manufacturers to shift their capacity in this direction. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are reducing consumer DRAM production to focus on data center-oriented manufacturing. This shift is putting laptop and smartphone manufacturers in a difficult position.

From a market impact perspective, devices in the $300-$500 price range are among the most affected. Manufacturers either face the risk of passing costs on to consumers or are forced to narrow their profit margins. Some brands are observed to be reducing storage capacity or switching to cheaper memory modules.

In the competitive landscape, major players such as Apple and Samsung can partially alleviate this pressure through long-term supply agreements. However, smaller manufacturers and new brands risk losing their price competitiveness in the face of rising memory costs.

Industry analysts predict that this supply shortage could last until mid-2027. The activation of new memory fabrication plants and improvements in production technology could restore balance in the long term. However, price increases appear inevitable in the short term.

For consumers, this situation creates an environment that may extend device replacement cycles or revitalize the second-hand market. RAMageddon may go down in history as a phenomenon that reshapes the balance between data center demand and consumer supply.
